Why are there different start times for marathon runners?
Marathon runners are assigned different start times depending on their speed and the time it takes them to finish a race. Previously, when all runners started the race at the same time, the slower ones who needed more time would be left behind in small number. Assigning different start times to each runner is believed to help with this issue in that the majority of runners, regardless of their speed, will catch up with one another towards the end of the race. And this generally makes for a more pleasant race. On the other hand, although previous running time records are carefully analyzed by the organizers, assigning different start times may not be as effective a measure as it should if runners fail to provide in the application truthful past records and expected running time for the race in question.

How do I know when I should start?
Marathon runners need to check the start time clearly specified on the chest number patch and be present at the begin line at that time. Starting the race at the wrong time is strictly prohibited.

Provision of false records may foul a runner.
It is also possible that certain runners may intentionally provide false records at the time of application, for instance, stating that 5-7 hours is required for them to finish the race while in fact they require only 3-4 hours, so that they may be assigned the 0200 hours start time and have a better chance of winning the race. This practice is a clear evidence of dishonesty and foul play. It will affect the general procession, spoil the mood of fellow runners and cause the staffs more problems. Please do not consider doing this under any circumstance.

Do give way.
Certainly, some runners aim not only to finish the race but also to win it. All runners need to be mindful of others and act in a sportsmanlike manner to ensure an orderly race. Slower runners are asked to stay to the left towards the side of the road throughout the race so that faster ones may conveniently pass.

Announcement of winners may be delayed.
This procedure which allows the majority of runners to finish the race around the same time is a plus for most. But it introduces considerable burden to the referees who must use great care in deciding the winners. Consequently, it is possible that the announcement of winners may be delayed. The organizers apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Runners who believe they may win should be present for the announcement.
As the championship rule will be used to decide winners and as certain amount of time is required for this, marathon runners who believe they may win should remain near the finish line for the announcement.

Do not run for others.
Running with another person's number patch and chip entails problems and confusion. Please do not run for other participants under any circumstance. This is a serious violation of rules and an apparent foul. Your honor is at stake!

Spirit will be greatly appreciated.
The organizers have applied their extensive experience to improve this event in every possible way. This is race may be likened to a test that determines the practicality of this method and its future use. Therefore, all runners are asked to kindly observe all rules and to be a helping hand that keeps "Standard Chartered Bangkok Marathon" a great and remarkable event.
